Strategy

Every three years, the Government calls upon community safety partnerships to produce a strategy of community safety targets for the following three years.

The Safer Hastings Strategy 2008-11 set the ambitious target of reducing crime in Hastings & St Leonards on top of the 27% reduction that was achieved in the previous plan year, 2005-08. We achieved this objective, cutting crime by a further 25.9% (2,629 incidents) since 2008.

The challenge facing us now is to maintain these big reductions with fewer resources; however, we remain positive this can be done with a focus on root causes that can lead people in to criminality such as unemployment, family breakdown, mental health problems, lack of respect for others and poor housing.

Our population is becoming diverse. Therefore we also need to consider and reduce the possible impact this may have on social tensions, hate crime and community cohesion.

And another area where we are starting to do more is engaging with the voluntary sector and local businesses, to ensure that their needs are met by the range of agencies working together to reduced crime and improve community safety.

The Hastings Community Safety Plan 2011-14 was launched in April 2011, highlighting the Partnership’s intention to reduce crime even further over the next three years, outlining the Partnership’s current priorities.
