Clearing up abandoned vehicles
November 2007
THE SAFER Hastings Partnership has contributed
£1,700 towards the removal of 30 abandoned vehicles in Coghurst
Woods.
 |
The vehicles
were originally dumped by joyriders. The East Hastings
Multi-Agency Tasking Team (MATT) applied for the small
grant from the SHP to remove the vehicles, many of
which are burnt out. The £1,700 from the SHP has paid
for a specialist winch, while another £3,000 has been
supplied by the local Neighbourhood Renewal Unit.
The multi-agency clearance event will involve 1066
Housing Association’s Resident Services Organisation,
the Probation Service, Hastings Borough Council’s
Warden Service, Police and the Youth Development Service.
Paul Fagan, Priority Area Project Officer, said, “We
are very pleased to receive this contribution from
the SHP to help us fund the clearance of these abandoned
vehicles in various states of decay. |
“An awful lot of hard work has been carried
out by a number of agencies through the East Hastings MATT
over the last 18 months, and this ‘Community Clearance Day’
will see that work culminate in creating a much cleaner, greener
and safer area of wooded land, which can be used by all members
of the community.”

St Paul’s awarded
grant to tackle bullying & anti-social behaviour
November 2007
A 10-WEEK anti-bullying campaign was launched by St Paul’s
CE Primary School this week using funding from the SHP.
| The
SHP donated £870 specifically to fund the
purchase of anti-bullying resources for the school,
which has 630 pupils, to launch its campaign to coincide
with National Anti- Bullying Week, which began on
Monday 19th November.
The grant has been used to buy resources
such as posters displaying playground rules and games,
as well as materials needed to establish an effective
School Council.
Head teacher Mrs Lock, pictured left
with students, said, “We aim to raise the children’s
awareness of the consequences bullying has upon the
lives of those at the receiving end, both at school
and within the community. |
|
“We believe the resources this funding has
enabled us to purchase will educate the children in their
responsibility, citizenship and the local community.”

Skates on at YMCA
November 2007
FOR THE second year in a row, the Safer Hastings
Partnership has allocated a small grant of £2,000 to enable
the YMCA to continue with its popular rollerskating sessions.
 |
The
Tuesday Skate Session has grown massively since it
was launched in September 2006, with more than 600
members and an average weekly attendance of around
80 young people.
Karen Manning, CEO of Hastings &
Rother YMCA, said, “A huge thank you to the SHP for
once again helping to fund our extremely popular Tuesday
night Skate Session. It is great to be able to offer
a free session that encourages sports and fitness
in a safe environment. We give young people somewhere
to go, something to do and a sense of belonging.”
The SHP grant will be spent on staffing the session
and paying for the hall hire. |
The Tuesday Skate Session takes place from
8pm to 10.30pm and is open to young people aged 14 and older.
A nominal 50p is charged for skate hire.

Pick up free safety equipment and meet the
Safer Hastings Partnership at Priory Meadow
January 2008
The Safer Hastings Partnership will be giving away personal
attack alarms, bike locks, tamper-proof tax disc holders,
property marking pens and a variety of other crime reduction
items at its ‘Meet the People’ day inside Priory Meadow Shopping
Centre on Saturday 26th January.
The SHP is once again linking with the local
Neighbourhood Renewal Team to hold this event to consult members
of the public about their priorities, in order to form the
Community Safety Plan 2008-11.
Following car crime analysis, which reveals
the five cars that have been most targeted in Hastings over
the last three years, Sussex Police will be giving out free
steering locks to owners of Ford Fiestas, Ford Escorts, Rover
Metros, Vauxhall Astras and Vauxhall Corsas who bring their
log books down to Priory Meadow on the day.
Members of the SHP & Neighbourhood Renewal
teams will be available from 9am to 5.30pm to hear residents’
concerns about safety and to advise on crime prevention.
Representatives of the SHP’s Anti-Social Behaviour
Unit, Sussex Police, Hastings Borough Council’s Warden Service
& Licensing Team will also be there to talk to members
of the public.
Chief Inspector Andy Gooch, the new Chair
of the Safer Hastings Partnership, said, “I want to encourage
residents to come along to talk to us about community safety
issues that concern them. This is an important opportunity
for local residents to shape our priorities for reducing crime,
disorder and anti-social behaviour in our town over the next
three years.”
The Safer Hastings Partnership brings together
the work of Sussex Police Authority, Sussex Police, Hastings
& St Leonards Primary Care Trust, East Sussex Fire &
Rescue Service, East Sussex County Council, Hastings Borough
Council and other agencies such as 1066 Housing Association.
