Competition Details
FOLLOWING the success of the Safer Hastings
Partnership’s (SHP) previous three Schools Competitions, the
crime reduction organisation has now launched its second art
competition.
The SHP’s ASB Art Competition 2008 invites
local school and college students to illustrate antisocial
behaviour issues with drawings, cartoons or computer graphics.
Depicting a variety of issues such as litter,
graffiti, under-age drinking and noise nuisance, the winning
entries will be printed in publicity materials for the SHP’s
Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Unit, starting with 5,000 leaflets
about the consequences of ASB, along with the name of the
artist and
his/her school. These leaflets will be used at local and national
events, as well as being passed to the Home Office’s Youth
Task Force.
The competition is open to students aged between
11 and 19 who attend secondary schools in Hastings & St
Leonards, Hastings College or Bexhill College. There are two
categories: one for secondary school pupils; the other for
college/6th form students. The prizes in both categories are
the same, with the winner bagging a PlayStation 3 for themselves
and a digital camera for their school or college/6th form.
Second prize in both categories is an iPod
Nano, while third prize is £50 high street shop vouchers.
There is no limit to the number of entries
per pupil, but all artwork must be submitted on separate sheets
of plain white A4 paper, portrait rather than landscape, with
a blank background. All entries must be received prior to
the deadline, which is 4.30pm on Friday 7th March 2008.
The Respect Hastings Art Competition will
be judged by the Safer Hastings Partnership’s Community Safety
Manager, ASB Unit and Communications Manager. The 15 short-listed
secondary school pupils and 15 short-listed college/6th form
students will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at
Horntye Park at 6pm on Wednesday 19th March.
Artwork must depict ASB issues, which include
(but are not limited to) graffiti, litter, under-age drinking,
noise nuisance, fly-tipping, fly-posting, aggressive begging,
groups loitering, street drinking, nuisance neighbours, dog-fouling
and abandoned vehicles.
The winning artwork will be used in a leaflet
featuring a ‘decision-tree’ showing the consequences of even
small acts of anti-social behaviour, and how these can be
far-reaching. The entrant’s name, age, address, school/college
and academic year must be clearly written on the back of each
entry. They should be submitted to: ASB Art Competition 2008,
Natalie Williams, Safer Hastings Partnership, c/o Hastings
Borough Council, 3rd Floor Aquila House, Breeds Place, Hastings,
East Sussex, TN34 3UY.
