Budding young artists win Nintendo Wiis and iPod Shuffles

Budding young artists from local secondary schools and colleges won Nintendo Wiis, iPods Shuffles and shopping vouchers in the Safer Hastings Partnership’s Respect Hastings Art Competition.

The winners’ artwork will be used on new leaflets about Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) to be produced by the Safer Hastings Partnership’s ASB Unit. At least 5,000 of these will be distributed locally and farther afield, including being seen by the Home Office’s Respect Task Force.

The Competition attracted nearly 200 entries from students of Hastings College of Arts & Technology, William Parker Sports College, Filsham Valley School, Helenswood School, Bexhill College and The Grove School.

First prize in the College/6th Form category went to Becky Burst, a 16-year-old studying for an Introductory Diploma to Art, Design & Media at Hastings College, who won a Nintendo Wii for herself and a digital camera for Hastings College.

In the secondary school category, Sam Chester, 13, came first, also winning a Nintendo Wii for himself and a digital camera for his school, William Parker Sports College.

Second and fourth prizes in the secondary school category were scooped by Filsham Valley School students Michelle Pooley (2nd) and Jack Tate (4th), who won an iPod Shuffle and a £25 High Street voucher respectively.

The third prize of a £50 High Street voucher went to Jessica Fitzwarren of Helenswood.

Second, third and fourth prizes in the College/6th Form category all went to students of William Parker Sports College. Elba Van Rensburg (2nd), Adam Withrington (3rd) and Jamie Dunmill (4th) won an iPod Shuffle, £50 in High Street vouchers and £25 in High Street vouchers respectively.

Jacqueline White, ASBO Caseworker with the Safer Hastings Partnership, said, “Congratulations to all the students who took part, but especially to the winners. It was incredibly difficult to choose the winners and runners-up from nearly 200 entries because it was clear that the students had put in so much effort and really thought about the issues relating to anti-social behaviour. Our new leaflet will use the winning artwork, and hopefully that of the runners-up as well.”

The judges, from the Safer Hastings Partnership, 1066 Housing Association, Sussex Police and Hastings Borough Council, short-listed the 25 best entries. All of these students were invited to the Awards Ceremony last night (26/03/07) at the Town Hall, where they were presented with certificates and goody bags.

Hastings College, William Parker and Filsham Valley School were picked out for special praise for the efforts of their staff and students.

SHP Respect Hastings Art Competition

YOU COULD win a Nintendo Wii for yourself, and a digital camera for your school, by taking part in the Safer Hastings Partnership’s ‘Respect Hastings’ Art Competition!

Graffiti Image

Following the success of the Safer Hastings Partnership’s 2006 Schools Competition, which asked local school pupils to produce storyboards for film clips for the Partnership’s community TV network, the SHP is now launching a new competition for budding artists.

The SHP’s Respect Hastings Art Competition is looking for drawings, cartoons and computer graphics to illustrate the various elements of anti-social behaviour, from litter to graffiti and street drinking to noise nuisance.

There are two categories: one for pupils at secondary schools in Hastings; the other for students at Hastings and Bexhill Colleges.

The first prize in both categories is the Nintendo Wii games console, with the winners also picking up a digital camera for their school and college.

Winners’ artwork will be used in publicity materials for the SHP’s Anti-Social Behaviour Unit, starting with 5,000 leaflets about ASBOs, with the winners’ names and their school/college printed on the back.

Second prize in both categories is an iPod Shuffle, with third prizes of £50 vouchers for high street shops and fourth prizes of £25 vouchers.

The deadline for entries is Friday 9th March 2007. Following the judging, 10 short-listed secondary school pupils and 10 short-listed college students will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony on Monday 26th March.

Natalie Williams, Communications Manager with the Safer Hastings Partnership, said, “Our last competition attracted more than 250 entries from local schools and all the feedback has been very positive, so we hope to be able to continue to build relationships and awareness of community safety issues with local schools and their
students through this art competition.”
