Budding young artists from local secondary schools and colleges won digital cameras, digital photo frames and Jessops gift cards in the Safer Hastings Partnership’s Art Competition 2009: Alcohol.

The winners’ artwork will be used in a booklet about the dangers of underage drinking, with the overall winner’s design used as the front cover.

The schools competitions run by the SHP have been recognised by a prestigious Home Office Tilley Award for engaging with local young people on community safety issues.

First prize in the College/6th Form category went to Sam Turpin of Academy6, while Jessica Fitzwarren of Helenswood won the secondary school category.

The College/6th Form category second and third prizes went to Aleksejs Cernovs and Mikaela Aro respectively. Second and third prizes in the secondary school category were scooped by Luke Manchester and Isra Husain respectively.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Hastings Borough Commander Peter Higgins, new chair of the Safer Hastings Partnership, said, “Congratulations to all the students who took part, but especially to the winners. The SHP was recently allocated £30,000 funding from the Home Office to tackle under-age drinking with a range of measures. Using artwork by local young people themselves will help us to better communicate the dangers of under-age drinking to their peers and their parents

All of the short-listed students were invited to the Awards Ceremony at the White Rock Theatre, where they were presented with certificates and goody bags by Mayor Maureen Charlesworth. Sussex Police’s Acting Chief Inspector Paul Phelps and Sussex Police Authority’s Carole Shaves MBE JP presented the prizes

January 2009

FOLLOWING the success of the Safer Hastings Partnership’s (SHP) previous Schools Competitions, the crime reduction organisation has now launched its third art competition.

The SHP Art Competition 2009: Alcohol invites local school and college students to design the cover for a booklet about under-age drinking. The booklet is aimed at both young people and their parents, and designs can use drawings, cartoons, photographs, computer graphics or other illustrations. (Please note that entries using clip art or Internet images without permission will be disqualified.)

The overall winning entry will be used as the cover for the new booklet, along with the name of the artist and his/her school. This booklet will be distributed to local young people and their parents throughout 2009.

The competition is open to students aged between 11 and 19 who attend secondary schools in Hastings & St Leonards, Hastings College or Bexhill College.

There are two categories: one for secondary school pupils; the other for college/6th form students. The prizes in both categories are the same, with the winner bagging a digital camera with accessories and digital photo frame for themselves and a digital camera with accessories for their school or college/6th form.

Second prize in both categories is a digital photo frame; third prize is a £25 Jessops gift card.

There is no limit to the number of entries per pupil, but all artwork must be submitted on separate sheets of plain white A4 paper, portrait rather than landscape, with the correct title and sub-heading.

All entries must be received prior to the deadline, which is 4.30pm on Friday 27th February 2009.

The SHP Art Competition 2009: Alcohol will be judged by the Chair of the Safer Hastings Partnership and SHP staff.

The 15 short-listed secondary school pupils and 15 short-listed college/6th form students will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at the White Rock Theatre at 6.30pm on Wednesday 25th March.

The entrant’s name, age, address, school/college and year must be clearly written on the back of each entry. They should be submitted to:
