Press Release The Winners Photos Of The Award Ceremony Schools Competition 2008
Local school students win prizes for community safety film ideas
The creativity of local students was commended once again by the Safer Hastings Partnership at its Schools Competition 2008 Awards Ceremony last night (3rd Dec).
Digital camcorders, Nintendo Wiis and iPod Shuffles were among the prizes given to local schools and winning pupils in the competition to produce a storyboard that could be turned into a film to be played on the Partnership’s community TV network, SHP-TV.
The Awards Ceremony attracted around 200 people, including the Mayor Councillor Maureen Charlesworth, Council Leader Peter Pragnell and Hastings District Commander for Sussex Police Chief Inspector Andy Gooch, as well as the short-listed 45 students (15 primary; 15 secondary, 15 college/6th form), who each received a certificate and goodie bag.
More than 530 local school students entered the competition, drawing storyboards for film clips about bullying, the dangers of underage drinking, graffiti, vandalism and deliberate fire-setting.
The winning primary school entry, by six-year-old Lara Lippin, a pupil at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, was a moving storyboard about treating everyone kindly no matter what differences you have. Lara won an Nintendo Wii games console for herself and a digital camcorder for her school. (The White Rock Theatre’s manager presented these prizes after donating the use of the venue for the awards ceremony.)
A Grove School pupil submitted the winning secondary school entry, which was about graffiti being a crime. Nathan Jones won a Nintendo Wii for himself and a digital camcorder for his school (prizes donated and presented by Hastings & Rother Primary Care Trust).
The winning college/6th form entry, which was a very strong message about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol, was submitted by a year 12-pupil from William Parker Sports College. Daisy Elliott, 16, won a Nintendo Wii for herself and a digital camcorder for her school (prizes donated and presented by Sussex Police).
All three winning clips have been turned into films, which are now playing across Hastings & St Leonards on SHP-TV. The screens are located at local venues including McDonalds, Hastings College, Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, the Conquest Hospital, Hastings Information Centre, etc.
Each of the three winners was presented with a DVD of the clip that was based on their storyboard idea and the clips were shown to the 200-strong audience at the Awards Ceremony.
Eighteen runners-up (six primary, six secondary, six college/6th form) each received a pair of Odeon Hastings Cinema tickets, donated by the Odeon Hastings.
All winning students, winning schools and runners-up were presented with crystal glass trophies along with their prizes.
The competition was judged by the sponsors (Odeon Hastings, Sussex Police, Hastings & Rother Primary Care Trust and the White Rock Theatre), as well as representatives of the Safer Hastings Partnership, Hastings Borough Council, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, the Hastings & St Leonards Excellence Cluster and Hastings Young Person’s Council.
Chief Inspector Andy Gooch, chair of the SHP, said, “Congratulations to all of the local school students who took part, but especially to the winners. It is important for us to find out how local young people feel about community safety issues, and our schools competitions give them a chance to express their opinions in a creative way. The standard was so high that it was extremely difficult to choose runners-up and winners out of the 532 entries we received.
“Thank you to all of the schools that took part, and to our sponsors. We hope to run another schools competition in 2009, so any teaching staff who would like to register their interest should email competitions@saferhastings.co.uk.”
Earlier this year, the SHP won a prestigious Home Office Tilley Award for its work to engage with local young people through previous schools competitions.

Competition Details
September 2008
THIS SUMMER the Safer Hastings Partnership (SHP) won a Home Office Award for its Schools Competitions, which have been a huge success. We are now inviting pupils from all schools and colleges in Hastings & St Leonards to enter the SHP Schools Competition 2008.
This year’s competition again asks local students to come up with storyboard ideas for film clips about the dangers of young people drinking alcohol, bullying (e.g. cyber-bullying, prejudice-based bullying), vandalism, graffiti and deliberate fire-setting. We specifically would like entrants to consider how they would feel if they or their family or friends were affected by these.
In a new twist to the previous format, the winning primary school, secondary school and 6th form/college storyboards will be made into animated film clips to be played on the Partnership’s 11-screen community TV network, SHP-TV, and on the SHP’s online media player at www.saferhastings.co.uk. The clips will feature the name of the winning pupil and their school or college’s logo.
The winning primary school, secondary school and 6th form/ college students will each be given a Nintendo Wii games console for themselves and a digital camcorder with accessories pack for each of their schools or colleges.
Second prize for each age group is a Nintendo DS Lite, while each 3rd prize winner will receive an iPod Shuffle. Eighteen runners-up (six primary, six secondary and six Competition Details 6th form/college students) will each receive a pair of Odeon Hastings cinema tickets.
The competition is open to any student attending primary school, secondary school, 6th form or college in Hastings & St Leonards, or aged 5-18 living in Hastings & St Leonards but attending Bexhill College or home-schooled.
There is no limit to the number of entries per school or college, but all storyboards must be submitted on plain white A4 paper with the pupil’s name, age, academic year and school written clearly on the back by 12pm on Friday 24th October 2008.
This year’s competition sponsors are Hastings & Rother Primary Care Trust, Sussex Police, Odeon Hastings and the White Rock Theatre.
Once again we have Senior Home Office Official John Scott on the judging panel along with members of the SHP, Sussex Police, Hastings Borough Council, Odeon Hastings, the White Rock Theatre, Sussex Police Authority, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, the Hastings & Rother Primary Care Trust, Hastings Young Person’s Council and CCN Ltd, the company behind SHP-TV.
The judges will narrow entries down to the best 45 (15 short-listed in each age group: primary, secondary, 6th form/college) and these 45 students will be invited to the Awards Ceremony in the Sussex Halls at the White Rock Theatre at 6.30pm on Wednesday 3rd December.
Entries should be submitted prior to the deadline to: SHP Schools Competition 2008, Safer Hastings Partnership, C/o Hastings Borough Council, Aquila House, Breeds Place, Hastings, TN34 1JJ.
