Local school students win prizes for community safety film ideas
The creativity of local students was commended once again by the Safer Hastings Partnership at its Schools Competition 2009 Awards Ceremony last night (1st Dec) at Azur.
Digital camcorders, Nintendo Wiis and iPod Nanos were among the prizes given to local schools and winning pupils in the competition to produce a storyboard that could be turned into a film to be played on the Partnership’s community TV network, SHP-TV.
The Awards Ceremony attracted more than 200 people, including the Mayor Councillor Maureen Charlesworth, Hastings District Commander for Sussex Police Chief Inspector Mark Ling and Borough Commander Peter Higgins of East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, as well as the short-listed 45 students (15 primary; 15 secondary, 15 college/6th form), who each received a certificate and goodie bag.
More than 700 local school students entered the competition, drawing storyboards for film clips about peer pressure, the dangers of underage drinking, noisy neighbours and how to escape from a burning building.
The winning primary school entry, by eight-year-old Henry Burden-Carey, a pupil at All Saints Church of England Junior School, was a very clear storyboard about what to do in the event of a fire. Henry won an Nintendo Wii games console for himself and a digital camcorder for his school (prizes donated and presented by Amicus Horizon, who sponsored the primary school category).
A William Parker Sports College pupil submitted the winning secondary school entry, which was about the fear of crime and perceptions of young people. Eleven-year-old Levi Buss won a Nintendo Wii for himself and a digital camcorder for his school (prizes donated and presented by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, who sponsored the secondary school category).
The winning college/6th form entry, which was a clever visual message about peer pressure relating to smoking and drugs, was submitted by 17-year-old Virginie Pierard, a student at Academy 6. She won a Nintendo Wii for herself and a digital camcorder for her college (prizes presented by Azur @ Marina Pavilion, who sponsored the college/6th form category by donating the use of Azur for the awards ceremony).
All three winning storyboads have been turned into films, which are now playing across Hastings & St Leonards on SHP-TV. The screens are located at local venues including McDonalds, Hastings College, Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, the Conquest Hospital, Hastings Information Centre, etc.
Each of the three winners was presented with a DVD of the film that was based on their storyboard idea and the films were shown to the 200-strong audience at the Awards Ceremony.
Eighteen runners-up (six primary, six secondary, six college/6th form) each received Odeon Cinema tickets, donated by the Odeon Hastings.
All winning students, winning schools and runners-up were presented with crystal glass trophies along with their prizes.
The competition was judged by the sponsors (Odeon Hastings, Amicus Horizon, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Azur), as well as representatives of the Safer Hastings Partnership, Hastings Borough Council, Sussex Police, the Hastings & St Leonards Excellence Cluster, Youth Offending Team, East Sussex County Council’s Safer Communities Team and Hastings Youth Council.
Chair of the SHP Peter Higgins, who is also Hastings Borough Commander for East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said, “Firstly I’d like to congratulate all of the local school students who were short-listed. With more than 700 entries it was very difficult to pick the winners this year, so they should feel incredibly proud. We run these competitions to find out how local young people feel about community safety issues, and to give them a chance to tell us what they think while also helping us to communicate our messages effectively to their peers.”
Last year, the SHP won a prestigious Home Office Tilley Award for its work to engage with local young people through schools competitions.
